IECC: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness Center

The Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness Centre IECC at Nile University is a multidisciplinary research center focusing on raising the competitiveness of Egypt through improving the current industrial practices, transferring technology from research laboratories to industry as well as mobilizing innovation-based entrepreneurship in Egypt and the region.  The centre aims to be the vehicle for Nile University to contribute to technology-based economic development in Egypt and the region by driving innovation, industry competitiveness, commercialization and entrepreneurship within the university and in society at large.

IECC is supported by the Management of Technology (MOT) M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs offered at NU and works in close collaboration with all other NU research centres on commercialization of their research results.

Research areas

Management of Technology for the Egyptian Innovation System: focusing on the assessment of the Egyptian national innovation system and the identification of the most promising manufacturing and services clusters in terms of innovation. The objective is threefold: 1) develop a technology/innovation map for Egypt, 2) propose recommendations to improve the innovation performance at different levels and types of firms, and 3) suggest recommendations to help integrate innovation and entrepreneurship into one overarching strategy to support promising clusters.

Egyptian Entrepreneurship Ecosystem: focusing on mapping the Egyptian entrepreneurship eco-system and investigating the factors affecting its success. Research issues include: 1) the intrinsic characteristics of the Egyptian entrepreneurship ecosystem in terms of regulatory, normative, and cognitive institutions, 2) the Egyptian culture and its impact on the entrepreneurship activity and performance in Egypt, and 3) the international dimension of Egyptian entrepreneurship.

Competitiveness of Egyptian Enterprises with Emphasis on SMEs: focusing on the outcomes of the innovation, entrepreneurship and production system activities in Egypt, especially in terms of firms’ competitiveness, job and wealth creation, and improvement of overall living standards of people. The objective is to develop a comprehensive framework for studying and measuring the outcomes of the entrepreneurship activity, and figure out ways to improve and maximize its economic and social benefits.

Technology Transfer:   This research theme focuses on technology transfer (TT) from two perspectives:  i) commercialization of research results transferring technology from laboratories to industry and society and ii) TT cross-industry from a transferor to a transferee at different levels. Research directions include but are not limited to:

·    Identification of the optimal technology transfer mechanisms locally and globally

·    Technology transfer and commercialization

·    Management of technology transfer systems

Sustainable Manufacturing:  This research theme focuses on sustainable manufacturing with the objective to create, develop and implement new innovative technologies, systems and decision support tools to enable industry to increase its competitiveness, capture new business opportunities and achieve more sustainable operations. The research directions include but are not limited to:

· Studying efficient implementation and transformation of the current traditional manufacturing processes into more green and efficient processes.

·  Developing innovative manufacturing technologies which address global resource shortages and excess environmental load to enable a benign environmental life cycle.

·  Improving reuse, efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint in manufacturing.

·  Closing product information loops (Design, Re-Use, Re-Manufacture, Recycle, and Disposal) to improve product life cycle management.
